Defrosting

So when Barb left the note about mold, I started getting really nervous about the ice in our window getting nasty. Today after work (which was very unpleasant), we slept in until Jeff went for a haircut at 4, then around 5 we got out the hair dryer and started melting some ice.

That was going really slowly, so we got out a screwdriver and hammer and started chiseling away. Had to be really careful not to hit the window. It made it go a lot faster

and we collected a lot of ice chunks from the window.

Now the window is all cleared out, revealing lots of icky mold underneath and on the sides of the window. Also, all the paint was starting to peel away.

Just a few chunks left, wiped up all the extra water and washed the towels involved. Tomorrow we’re bleaching Jeff’s hair, and I’m going to use whatever is left of the bleach on the mold spots in the window. What fun!

You know you’re poor when…

Ice forms on the inside of your windows because you can’t afford to heat the house.

(EDIT) Jeff and I have realized that with the big blanket we have covering the window (to block out light, since we sleep all morning), the ice actually makes a nice little cooling-unit. We put some cold snacks and soda up there. Now we don’t have to run upstairs every time we want a drink!

Jeff is 21

Today was Jeff’s 21st birthday. He went down to SLC early this morning – I guess he never truly went to bed after work yesterday – around 6 am to play in Magic: The Gathering’s new card set tournament. They hold these every three months or so and periodically Jeff is interested enough in one to go.

I’ve been really sick all week so I stayed here (good thing too) and slept until 3ish. I’ve slept hours and hours and I’m STILL really tired. Thanks to everyone who remembered his birthday, though. He got lots of great cards he’s really happy with and had a good time. He ordered out some pizza for his dinner and seems to just want to go to bed. Who can blame him? Worked until 9:30 last night, only slept for an hour and went off at 6 to play in a tournament.

Well, I think he’s had a good day. I feel bad that I’ve been so sick and haven’t been able to do as much as I wanted to. For his birthday I got him a wireless keyboard and mouse duo, and a 120GB hard drive upgrade he very much needed. He loves them both very much.

I’m really tired. I’m off to sleep :)

Gripe

I just had to make a quick post and complain a lot about the stupidity of our job’s policy on sick days.

Most companies will give you two weeks of vacation time, right? (well, the ones I’ve worked at anyway) and will divide those into “vacation” and “personal” which really means sick time. Well, not at Feature Films! Not only do we have to share headsets, which are gross, and touch the same screens, which are gross, but we only get 3 sick days in 3 months. That includes any days that you can’t make it to work (for instance, the day our car broke down and we couldn’t make it in, or that day we nearly didn’t make it because of the snow storm on the way home from Denver).

I’m on 3 already and have only used one of those for actually being sick. This week I’m fighting off a monster of a cold (which I undoubtedly acquired from a fellow worker) and now they won’t let me go home and try to get better, so I’m not only sucking at doing my job because I feel lousy, but I’m probably passing it on to someone else who will then do their job sucky and PROBABLY pass it back on to me.

I hate jobs. They’re stupid.

Update

Haven’t written in a while, so I thought I’d make a quick post.

Jeff and I forgot to get up for work the Saturday before New Years, so we had a three day weekend. That Sunday we went to see my Carter grandparents before they leave in a week or so for their mission in Canada. We came home and decided we needed some yummy treats to celebrate a little, and we were in Walmart (the only place still open that time of night) when it turned to 2007. Really, I’m with Carrie, it’s not a big deal. We ate some cheese stuffed pizza and had some sodas and ice cream and watched movies all night.

The only other thing we’ve done is gone to two movies I wanted to recommend. Pursuit of Happyness, a really good movie that makes you thankful for what you have. I always worry about having enough money and having a cold house and managing to pay bills and still eat, this movie made me feel very rich. It was excellent.

Tonight we went to see Night at the Museum. Jeff’s parents sent us a gift card to Lowe’s for Christmas and it came with two free tickets, so we didn’t feel bad about spending the money because we didn’t. It was really funny and I enjoyed it more than I thought. I was a little bored at first but enjoyed the rest of it.

Jeff’s birthday is in a few weeks. Magic: The Gathering is having their next prerelease on his birthday, we go to them from time to time. So that’s his birthday wish. The other thing he wanted was a hard drive for his current 30GB setup, so we went to Best Buy and got him 120GB for $65. Very nice.

After the movie we went to Walmart (again) and got a DVD cleaner and some protective plastic snap-ons for our movies. We’re very protective of them. So we’re just sitting here loading his computer up with stuff that wouldn’t fit before and I’m cleaning a few discs. Watching The Sound of Music.
